Is it too late for you to start a YouTube channel in 2020? This is the million dollar question. Everyone seems to want to know if the market is too saturated. With over 2 billion users on the platform, it’s a very fair question to ask.

So how does one start a YouTube channel when there are already millions of others putting out content? Is it even a good idea to try?

While we can’t tell you whether or not your specific channel would do well if you started it, we can give you some examples of channels that have recently experienced large growth.

One example is Jenelle Eliana. Eliana is a YouTuber who, when she began her channel, lived in a 1995 GMC Vandura Explorer with her pet snake, Alfredo. She is a newer YouTuber- the oldest video on her channel was posted on June 26, 2019. She has seen tremendous growth, as she has 2.44 million subscribers and over 77 million views.

According to a Think Media video titled “Is it Too Late to Start YouTube in 2020?” Joana Ceddia is another YouTuber that started her channel not too long ago and has experienced great growth. Ceddia posted her first video on June 28, 2018 and now has 3.26 million subscribers and over 280 million views.

So to answer the question of whether or not you can still begin a channel in this day and age and experience growth, the data shows that it is possible. Now comes the next important question- how?

There are a few key things to consider when thinking about growing a YouTube channel. These are not the only important things to keep in mind, but definitely the foundational ideas behind growth.

Upload Consistently

This might sound like a basic tip, but most channels that are successful are those that consistently give their followers content. You can’t upload once every other month and expect people to want to subscribe. People subscribe when they know that you will deliver content to their YouTube homepage regularly.

Find A Niche Market

The bottom line is this- people come to your channel seeking out content that they like. If you upload a makeup haul video one day and a video about how to fix your car the next day, odds are that people will not want to subscribe to your channel. They will not know what to expect from you. Creating a brand for your channel and staying consistent to that brand will attract the right audience, which means it attracts an audience that is much more likely to be engaged with your channel. Can you still start a YouTube channel in 2020? Yes, if you get a clear idea of what niche audience you will add value to.

Upload Searchable Videos

Odds are high that people will not want to watch a day in the life video from someone they don’t know and if they aren’t already an established viewer of the channel. There are exceptions to this if, for example, you are the CEO of a successful company or if you live a unique life in some way, shape, or form. If you are just filming your everyday life, though, it will be hard to build a follower base as a new YouTuber. The key with starting a YouTube channel in 2020 is to create videos that people are interested in seeing. After you draw them in, then they will be more inclined to watch videos and know more about your daily life. A good way to grow an audience is to create the videos that people are searching for. This also ties back to adding value, as people will be much more inclined to subscribe to your channel if it adds some sort of value to their lives.

Add A Unique Spin

Let’s face it, nobody wants to watch the same types of YouTube videos over and over again. By adding a unique spin to your videos, you provide the audience with something that they can get only by coming to your channel. For example, you may want to watch a day-in-the-life video, so you watch a Casey Neistat vlog. There are plenty of other vloggers out there, but Neistat edits his videos in a story-telling format, which makes him stand out amongst the many daily vloggers. Do something different that draws people to your videos.

Can you still start a YouTube channel in 2020? Yes. You definitely can. It may seem overwhelming and over-saturated, but if you can create quality content that people truly enjoy, you will be able to build yourself an audience.
