Is the Leica Q2 Worth the Money?

The Leica Q2 is one of those cameras that just really stands out. From its durability to its 47.3 megapixel full-frame sensor, this camera packs a lot into one small camera. While there are many pros to the Leica Q2, there are also a few cons, like the fact that most people aren’t able to just drop almost $6,000 on a new camera.

After using this camera for almost a year, we think that we can offer you a pretty good overview of the camera. We also feel like we can give you a pretty clear answer on whether or not you should drop the money and add this camera to your collection.

The camera is weather resistant. If you want a camera that you can throw in your bag and take to the beach for some photos, you should buy the Leica Q2. Thinking of taking it into a dusty or wet environment? This is the camera for you. The IP dust and spraywater sealing make this the perfect camera to bring when you’re out adventuring and don’t want to worry about a splash of water or some dust ruining your expensive camera.

The photos are very high quality. This camera features a 47.3 megapixel full-frame sensor, meaning you are going to have some very high-quality photos to hang up on your walls. This full-frame sensor is almost double the megapixels as the Leica Q, which features a 24 megapixel CMOS full-frame sensor.

The camera has a 28 MM lens. This gives you the ability to use as a wide lens and then crop while editing. There’s even a ring on the lens to switch to macro mode.

The lens isn’t interchangeable. Let’s face it, most casual photo-takers aren’t going to buy a camera this nice. With that being said, it opens up the question- why not make this camera one that allows you to change the lens? If it is such a nice camera, wouldn’t you expect the customers to be ones that want different lenses for different photos and different scenarios?

The camera isn’t pocket sized. False advertising, anybody? As much as we love Leica, this camera is not pocket-sized. The lens is way too large to fit in the average pocket comfortably. The whole “pocket-sized” claim may have been a bit of a stretch. If you are really wanting something that is pocket-sized, maybe opt for a different camera.

The camera isn’t the best for video. Yes, the camera shoots video in 4K, but we’re not sold on the video quality. The video mode doesn’t allow you to change or customize a lot, so you are getting pretty basic video options with this. Should you buy the Leica Q2? Probably not, if you’re looking for a camera to shoot a lot of videos with.

It has a hefty price tag. This camera is amazing, but as you know, amazing is not usually synonymous with cheap. The Leica Q2 is on the expensive side, totaling almost $6,000 at the time we bought ours (almost a year ago). While the camera may be a little bit cheaper now, it is still on the more expensive side.

So, should you buy the Leica Q2? To sum it all up, we think this camera is worth the buy. The biggest obstacle and the reason why many will not decide to buy this camera is the price. Although we hated dropping that kind of money, the pros outweigh the cons and make this camera worth it for us. We have taken photos in some of the most beautiful places in the world, and having those high-quality photos hanging on our walls makes this camera worth the buy, overall.

If you are thinking of buying this camera, here are a few questions to ask yourself. Do I want a rugged camera that I can take on travels and not worry about being careful with? Do I have a strict budget, or am I able to spend the money on a camera like this? Does not being able to change lenses bother me all that much?

Once you answer these questions, you should be able to make a pretty sound decision about whether or not you should buy the Leica Q2. If you want to learn more about the camera, check out our YouTube video review HERE.
